The roots of this cartoon go back to 1965! That year, Gene Mueller and I took an MPS-34 X-band radar with a maser RF amplifier to Adams Ranch, west of Soccorro, New Mexico. A.D. Little had also brought an X-band radar along. Marty Cohen worked on that system. We tried to compare reflectivities for showers and never quite got the same reflectivities. At one point when we were "fairly" close, Marty commented, "WHat's a few dB among friends." That off-hand comment has found lots of use over the years, as during the early years of NHRE when radars were miscalibrated to the tune of 11 or 12 dB!
